Canine Good Citizen Program

Prerequisite is our Basic Obedience Training Program.

The CGC Program is a two part program that is designed to 1) teach responsible dog ownership to owners and 2) certify dogs that have the training and behaviors needed to be reliable, well - behaved members of their families and communities.

Jim is an AKC approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluator.

The purpose of the CGC Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. The CGC Program welcomes both purebred and mixed breed dogs.

In order for a dog to earn the title of Canine Good Citizen both the owner and their dog need to pass a 10 item test.

The CGC test is noncompetitive and dogs are not required to perform with precision, although by the time we're done training it in either Basic or Advanced Obedience, it will. Dogs that pass all 10 items of the CGC test are listed in the CGC records at the American Kennel Club. Owners of dogs that pass all 10 items of the CGC test earn an official CGC certificate from the American Kennel Club. CGC is an award, not a title. The CGC test is a partial screening tool for therapy dogs and/or service dogs.

Homeowners Insurance is now available to breeds previously excluded with a  CGC certificate.

The CGC award is a prerequisite to Therapy Dog Training.
